The worlds of fashion and ballet seem similar enough, what with their shared dependence on lithe ladies, frothy skirts, unforgiving shoes and diva personalities.

“People think, ‘Well, how different can it be?’ ” said Marc Happel, New York City Ballet’s director of costumes. “But they’re designing clothes, we’re dealing with costumes. It’s a great difference.”
